Connor Barnes (Barney) Helton was a true friend of mine. Even though we grew apart as we aged, I know that if I ever needed anything, he would have helped me. I also know that he knew that I would do the same for him. Barney was a good man, and I’m confident his boys will be just fine, because they had him as their Father. RIP Brother.
Barney and I met in the Guard. We attended officer candidate school and got our commissions together. We then were roommates while we attended our officer basic course in Ft. Benning, GA. Since we both loved the outdoors and fishing, we went on a couple of trips to Canada with our packs, fishing gear and a canoe. We spent many hours working on his cabin in Colorado. As we grew older, got married and had children, we grew apart. I truly regret that aspect of our friendship. He was a man with solid core beliefs and he was dedicated to his two boys. Even though I’ve not seen him in some time, I miss him now. RIP brother
