Alvin “Big Al” Tupa

Al (Alvin) L. Tupa, Jr., affectionately known as “Big Al” to his family, was a dedicated and humble man. He worked hard throughout his life and earned the respect of those around him. Al valued being treated with the same respect he offered others. He enjoyed the outdoors, struck up conversations easily with almost anyone, liked tinkering, and loved his family above all else.

Al was born on September 18,1947, in Norfolk, Nebraska, to Alvin L. Sr. and Rudina (Schindler) Tupa. He died peacefully at his home on March 16, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Al lived in Elgin, Nebraska for several years before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska where he attended Mickle Middle School and Lincoln Northeast High School, graduating in 1965.

He married the love of his life, Gloria Sazama, on July 3, 1971. No matter what life threw at them, Al and Gloria persevered and loved one another unconditionally. They did a darn good job raising their two kids, too.

Al worked at the Ace Hardware Distribution Center in Lincoln for 33 years. He later worked as a delivery driver for Cornhusker Heating & Air, also in Lincoln.

Early in his life, you could find Al helping family on their farm outside Elgin; sitting in a blind hunting ducks and geese; walking fields hunting pheasants or deer; camping with family; or fishing at local lakes and ponds.

As the years passed, Al spent his free time following his children to their sporting events and school activities. Eventually, his six grandchildren took center stage. They introduced him to dance recitals, school concerts, ball games, technology, and the latest slang words. Their accomplishments and antics brought him endless joy.

Al is survived by his wife, Gloria; his “favorite daughter” and “favorite son-in-law,” Raejean and Jason Brooks; his “favorite son” and “favorite daughter-in-law,” Aaron and Bridget Tupa; his grandchildren, Ella, Amelia, Larkin, Lucas, Teegan, and Bellamy; his sister Kathy Ilg; and his favorite winged and four-legged family members: Birdie, Shelldon, Murphy, Ralph, Archie, Beasley, Vee, and Max.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Al was loved more than words can truly express. His family already misses him tremendously.

A private family service was held at Wyuka Cemetery.
