Obituary

Darrell L. Buss

Darrell L. Buss, 84, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on June 14, 2026. Born in Hastings, NE, on March 13, 1942, to Alfred and Esther (Lipsack) Buss, Darrell was a man of quiet strength, known for his steady presence, practical mind, and deep devotion to his family.
Darrell approached life with a calm focus and a love for organization. He enjoyed his time in Boy Scouts, Troop 22 in Hastings, advancing to the rank of Eagle Scout and later serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster for his son’s troop (93) in Lincoln. He attended Hastings High School and was the drum major for the marching band, and later graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. At UNL, he was also an ROTC Cadet and member of the National Society of Pershing Rifles. After graduating, Darrell served his country in Vietnam.
As an early computer professional, he spent his career building and managing computer infrastructure and processes for U.S. Steel, the State of Nebraska, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), and First National Bank of Omaha. His meticulous nature extended to his personal life, where he kept careful records, an organized garage and workshop, and well-maintained homes and vehicles. A patient handyman and woodworker, Darrell appreciated fine detail and loved tinkering, building, and fixing things.
Though private and reserved, Darrell possessed a dry wit rarely displayed outside of circles of close family and friends. He was a dependable teacher, a quietly sentimental man, and a proud veteran, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a dedicated attendee of his grandchildren’s activities, helping them celebrate their achievements in sports, dance, music, academics, and more, including administering the U.S. Army oath of enlistment to his youngest granddaughter.
Darrell was a long-time member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lincoln and King of Kings Church in Omaha, volunteering in multiple roles at each and traveling to Russia on two mission trips. He is survived by his children, Barbara (Kenny) Leymaster and Drew (Deepa) Buss, all of Lincoln; his brother, Richard (Dottie) Buss of Castle Pines, CO; his grandchildren, Katie (Jessi) Owen, Joshua Leymaster, and Maya Buss; and his great-grandchildren, Elsie and Jordy Owen; along with numerous extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Baker) Buss; his parents, Alfred and Esther Buss; and his granddaughter, Leela Buss.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Wyuka Funeral Home, 3600 O Street, Lincoln, NE. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the family to be given in appreciation of the hospice and memory care professionals who cared so tenderly for Darrell and his family.
