Ralph J. Green passed away on May 30, 2026, at the age of 103. He was born at home in Lincoln, Nebraska, on January 15, 1923, to John and Christina Green.
He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941 and then attended the National Youth Association to become a machinist. Ralph also attended the University of Columbia in New York and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he studied General Arts.
Ralph served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946 as a Gunner’s Mate Third Class. He was transferred to the Brooklyn Navy Yard until he was shipped out. During his tour of duty, he traveled to France, India, England, Belgium, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal.
Ralph met Edith in Jersey City, New Jersey, during his tour of duty, and they were married in 1946. Together they had three children: Barbara, Irene, and Ralph Jr. They lived in Union City, New Jersey, for a short time before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1947.
After returning to Lincoln, Ralph worked for Meadow Gold and for a garbage hauler. In 1950, he purchased a garbage route and owned and operated the refuse service until his retirement in 1985.
In 1988, Ralph and his family members built his log home, where he lived until February 2026, when he moved to an assisted living facility.
Ralph was a very optimistic person who enjoyed hunting and cooking. He loved trying new recipes and especially enjoyed making rye bread and runzas. During his retirement, he spent his time woodworking, creating many wooden toys and pieces of furniture.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Edith; two brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by his children, Barbara Hughes (Don), Irene Roseberry (Roger), and Ralph Junior (Jennifer). He was blessed with eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Ralph lived a long and fulfilling life.
Graveside services will be held on July 31, 2026, at 10:30 AM, at Wyuka Cemetery, 3600 “O” street, Lincoln, Nebraska. The family would like to invite you to a luncheon following the service, in the “Garden Room” at Wyuka Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made in care of the family for donation to a veteran’s organization.
