Dorothy Jean (Starkel) Anderson

Dorothy Jean (Starkel) Anderson was born on July 11, 1936.  She was Baptized August 1, 1936, and confirmed on June 3, 1951, in the Lutheran faith at United Lutheran Church.   Dorothy’s Baptism came to fulfillment on August 19, 2025.

Dorothy was born in Lincoln, NE to Jacob and Lydia Starkel. She lived in the Havelock area.  She had three sisters, Joyce, Margorie, Betty and one brother, Larry.  Dorothy graduated from Northeast High School in 1954.

After high school, Dorothy worked at the Capitol. She met and married Ivan Anderson on February 5, 1956, at United Lutheran Church. Dorothy gave birth to five children.  Her first born, Mark, lived three days; and her other children are Lorri, Gloria, Steve and Jerry.

Dorothy was housewife/stay at home mom raising 4 kids.  In her kids’ younger years, Dorothy didn’t have a driver’s license. When needed, she would walk with the kids to the grocery store. She would also take them to the swimming pool where each took lessons. Later years, Dorothy worked at Kawasaki, Havelock Ben Franklin and retired from the Seward Walmart.

Dorothy enjoyed cooking and baking.  She would make homemade bread, Runza’s were her specialty. Other specialties were mouldasha’s, coffee cake, Belina, and homemade noodles, which the family enjoyed. On Sunday’s she would attend church and would have a good Sunday dinner everyone loved. She enjoyed holidays with the whole family; she would cook and bake lots of goodies. She also enjoyed sewing and crocheting.  In her later years, she enjoyed bingo and keno. Dorothy devoted her life to Ivan and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Lorri Ring of Lincoln and Gloria (Kenny) Hartshorn of Lincoln; her sons, Steve (Gail) Anderson and Jerry Anderson, both of Pleasant Dale. She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Ryan (Kelly) Anderson, Amy Anderson, Chadd Sewell, and Travis Sewell; step-grandchildren, Ivy Ring and Skylar Eickhoff; and great-grandchildren, Sydney, Karly, Lia, Kinley, Mason, Jaxon, Zaydon, and James. She is also survived by her sister, Betty Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her son, Mark; husband, Ivan; parents, Jacob and Lydia Starkel; sisters, Joyce Starkel and Marjorie Santerre; brother, Larry Starkel; and her son-in-law, Shawn Ring.

A visitation will be held from 10 AM to 10:45 AM, with her funeral service following at 11 AM, Monday, August 25, 2025, at United Lutheran Church, 5945 Fremont St., Lincoln, NE. Interment to follow the service at Fairview Cemetery, Lincoln, NE.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to United Lutheran Church.

Dorothy’s family would like to thank Sumner Place nursing staff for taking such good care of her.
