Michael Bomberger

Michael “Mike” Bomberger, 73, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on December 14, in Omaha, due to complications from diabetes. He was born on September 16, 1952, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mike graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School in 1971. He was a proud, certified union plumber and steamfitter with Local Union 464. To help provide for his large family, he kept busy with more than one job. He thrived on hard work from a very young age. His outgoing, salesman-like personality contributed greatly to his success in any path he chose, personal or professional.  After many years of dedicated service and brotherhood in the Union, Mike most recently retired from Union 464 Steamfitters.

Mike was the proud father of five children: Mike Bomberger Jr., Leah Barkley, Erin Jenkins, Kelsey Bomberger, and Briana Johnson.  He taught his children the importance of family, hard work, and always doing what is right. His work ethic skills transferred to his grandchildren later in life, with him passing on his knowledge.

Known for his strong work ethic and “always willing to help” personality, Mike had a smart-aleck sense of humor and truly enjoyed meeting new people. If you met him once, you would feel like you had known him for years. As a young man and into his retirement age, he was always on the go—rarely sitting still—and often lived by one of his favorite sayings: “Why put off until tomorrow what you can get done today.”

Mike had a passion for gardening and model airplane building, hobbies that reflected his creativity, and love for working with his hands. He spent weekends out dancing with close friends from the singles group at church. He enjoyed participating in group outings, often dressing up for Halloween, and bringing in the New Year with his crew, dressed to the nines. He was also an active member of St. Mark’s Methodist Church. Mike volunteered his time at church and the City Mission. He participated in the Teammates program here in Lincoln as well. One of his love languages was gift giving.

He is survived by his children: Mike (Jonne), Leah (Joel), Erin (Ryan), Kelsey, and Briana (Scott); his siblings: Delmar Bomberger Jr., Barbara Brown, and Brian Bomberger; and nine beloved grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Delmar and Dorothy Bomberger, and his sister, Carol Fine.

A funeral service will be held at Wyuka Funeral Home on Sunday, December 21, at noon. His headstone will be placed at a later date next to his parents and sister.

In lieu of flowers please send all donations to the Peoples City Mission.

    • I grew up as neighbors to Mike and his family! His sister was my best friend growing up. When Carol passed away, Mike and I considered driving to Minnesota to her service. We decided not to due to the weather. So I went to Mike’s house to be with him during the time of Carol’s service. We talked about Carol and our special memories. Then Mike brought out old family pictures. I have had many special times shared with Mike. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him! My sincerest sympathies to his beautiful family! Rest in eternal peace dear friend!

  7. My sympathies to the family. I just knew Mike through church and the Wednesday night dinners. He was always fun My husband knew him through the Plumbers Union although they never worked together. We would usually always arrive at church on Wednesday nights, me to work, him to eat and I would kid him we weren’t serving yet. He would just come in and sit and visit with people while he was waiting. He has been missed on Wednesday nights.

  9. I first met Mike around late 2006 at St Marks. Even though I now live in Norfolk, I’d still stop and visit him many times. We were very good friends. My sincere condolences to his family. I got to mow his yard more than once. Many good visits.

  10. I first met Mike in 7th grade at Dawes Junior High. He was a big guy with a big laugh, but it’s his “chuckle” that I’m remembering now.

We reconnected several times during the past year and talked about old times and old friends.

Mike will be missed by many….
