He scared me a little, but that was before I got to know him. While we probably had different political opinions, he always treated me with respect, as he did with my clients and the other side. In my mind, he was what a judge was supposed to be. Even though I have not interacted with him for more than 20 years, he still left an impact on me as an attorney as well as a person. Rest in deserved peace.

We were active in the Goldwater campaign which he Chaired while in law school. Republican politics were of special interest to him, particularly from a public policy point of view. It was my honor to be at his swearing in, having just been elected to Congress in 1980 and sworn in in January of 1981, and to be a part of his elevation during those Reagan years, to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. Always reserved in public demeanor, but truly an animated personality in social settings, his thoughtful approach to all, in family and professionally, endeared him to us all. Blessings to the family at this time of great personal loss. He lived a Magnificat, but humble life, filled with accomplishments, many friends, and he leaves an admirable legacy for us all to emulate. Hal Daub

His regular attendance and commitment to both projects and the Rotary motto of “service above self” was always admirable. It was an honor to know him and share that Rotary fellowship. He will be deeply missed.

I am grateful for his many years of service to our courts.

I always enjoyed sharing lunch time with him at Rotary Club. Years ago, we shared a few rounds on the golf course at Hillcrest with Arlen and Betty. A wonderful man who contributed a lot to the world. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.
