Dorothy S. Welchoff

Dorothy Speer Welchoff age 82, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 in Lincoln.  She was born on June 5, 1929 in Oak Park, IL and  was a twin daughter of Grace M. (Long) and John C. Speer. She retired in 1987 after 19 years as Director of Food Service for Harper-Schramm-Smith Residence Halls at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln Campus.   After graduating from UNL she was the Food Service Director for the Nebraska Student Union. In 1955 she joined the Civilian Special Services division of the US Army and served one year in Korea as Director of an enlisted men’s Service Club on a base north of Seoul, Korea. She also served at Fort Polk, LA.   She married Charles F. Welchoff III in 1958 in Philadelphia, PA and for the next 10 years was a homemaker, raising 3 children in Fort Washington, PA. In 1968, she and the children returned to Lincoln.  She was always involved in community service activities – served as President of the West “A” Community Association, President of the Willard Community Center, and Secretary for the Lancaster County Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority, Nebraska Alumni Association and also a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her twin sister Ruth (Neff). She is survived by her 3 children and 9 grandchildren, and her older sister Barbara Nodine of Madison, WI.   Her family includes daughter Darci Coolidge and husband John Jr. – children Sarah Orr, Joshua Orr, and Nathan Coolidge of Omaha; daughter Lori Mack and fiancé Brad Browne – children Taylor, Austin, Mikayla Mack of Lincoln; son Richard (Rick) Welchoff and wife Dawn (Smith) – children Branson, Brooke, and Bailey of Lincoln.

Memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church Chapel located at Sheridan Blvd. and South Streets on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 10:00 A.M.  with a private family inurnment at Wyuka Cemetery, 3600 O Street.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Willard Community Center at 1245 South Folsom, Lincoln, NE 68522, or the Lancaster County Chapter of the Red Cross. Arrangements made by Wyuka Funeral Home and Cemetery.


  1. What a wonderful woman. One of her legacies is her loving family. I am so sorry for your loss. You made her twilight years sunny. I hope many fond memories will help you through this sad time.
