Myrtle Izora (Hielen) Grant

Myrtle Izora (Hielen) Grant of Lincoln, was born on January 30, 1943 in Columbia, South Carolina to John I & Nina M. Hielen.  She passed away peacefully while reading a book on Wednesday, March 28, 2018. 

Her family moved to Nebraska in 1950.  She graduated from Aurora High School and then left to serve in the Women’s Army Corp where she met her husband Arthur Donald Grant.

After leaving the Army, Myrtle moved to Lincoln and worked for Miller & Paine bakery until their closure and then worked in the bakery for Russ’s Market Bishop Heights and 17th & Washington before retiring.  She was active in the Cornhusker Doll Club and sewed doll clothes that she donated to different organizations.  She loved reading and instilled a love of the same in her daughter.  She also enjoyed baking for the other residents at her apt. complex The Walter.   

She is survived by her daughter Margaret A. Tupper (Kelvin), Lincoln.   Grandchildren: Jared M. Tupper, Dakota W. Tupper, and Mariah P. Tupper.  Sisters:  Francie Larsen(Del),  Dorthea McMeen (Chris), and Virginia Hielen  Various nieces and nephews.  Preceded in death by her parents,  sister J. Pamela (Hielen) Leak and brother Michael D. Hielen.

Memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Wyuka Funeral Home.

Interment with military honors will be at Wyuka Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the Lincoln City Libraries Foundation.

  1. I visited with Myrtle almost every week. She was one of the sweetest ladies I knew. She was talented, loving, kind and I am going to miss her so much. It was a joy to bring her books every week knowing how much she loved to read them.

    It was so strange not heading over to see her this Friday. I’m going to miss hearing her say, “Come on in hon” and then sending me off with “You have a good week hon!”

    I am so blessed to have known her.
