Rex James Scott, 67, passed away August 3, 2015 while under the loving care of the expert staff at Country House, 25th and Old Cheney, and Aseracare Hospice. A lifelong Lincoln resident, he was born on December 7, 1947 to John R. and Melba M. (Myers) Scott. He was raised on a poultry farm near Playmor and attended country school District 107 on West “O”, University High School, Nebraska Wesleyan University, University of Nebraska Lincoln and Kearney State College.
Rex spent his teaching career with LPS as a social studies teacher at Everett Park Middle School and was active in LEA as a faculty representative. He retired at the rank SFC-E7 from the Army National Guard where he served as a medic/instructor with the 24th Medical Company. He also drove the train at the Children’s Zoo, was a host at the original Valentino’s, promoted seat belt usage for Nebraska Highway Safety, worked at Tiernan’s Ambulance Service, Lincoln General Hospital’s Emergency Room, and Hovland-Swanson where he met his wife. In 1982, he was appointed to the Nebraska State Ambulance Board by Governor Charles Thone. He held a teaching certificate, EMT license#153, and for awhile a real estate license. He loved his work.
Rex volunteered at the American Red Cross all of his adult life. He worked on the First Aid Team at Memorial Stadium for 45+ years, headed up the First Aid team at Salt Dogs games during their opening seasons as well as State Games and Special Olympics, and many other events.
Rex is survived by his wife of 48 years Nikki (Nutt) Scott; son Eric (Deanne) of Valentine; daughter Elizabeth “Libby” of Lincoln and brother, John R. Scott II of Yoder, Wyoming; granddaughter, Alexa (Tyler) Caulkins; and grandson Braxton Green. His extended family includes a mother-in-law, Marilyn E. Nutt, a brother-in-law, Bob (Melanie) Nutt of Cozad and the most amazing group of nieces and nephews. Rex was preceded in death by his beloved parents, John and Melba; father-in-law, George M. Nutt and sister-in-law Nancy Fredericksen.
A celebration of life will be held at Wyuka Funeral Home on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. with a light lunch to follow. Interment will be at a later date.
Memorials can be directed to donor’s choice, but suggestions could include LEA Harvest of Books, Parkinson’s Research Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association or Country House Memory Care.

Although I haven’t seen Rex for a number of years, I remember him as one of the instructors for the 91B school with NE ARNG. I always liked Rex; he was knowledgeable and reliable and a good friend. I am so sorry for your loss.

I’m so very sorry for your loss; I had no idea he was going through so much. I was fortunate enough to get to know Rex throughout my years with the Athletic Department (Events Office). He was always so kind, fun and easy to talk to during events. I could always tell how passionate he was about his work and the people with which he interacted. It was a terrible shock when I read in the St. Paul United Methodist Church bulletin this morning that Rex had died. We were very close growing up. We both attended District #107 on West “O” and University High School for 13 years of our lives, graduating in 1965. As boys we were both involved in scouting, meeting in what use to be called “Huskerville” N.W. of Lincoln. John and Melba were friends of my parents, Floyd and Vivian Flader. We lived two miles north of District #107.
